Teaching Philosophy
-
Appreciation-My students leave class with an appreciation for dance and the arts. My students are the future audiences and supporters of the arts. I will guide them to understand the importance of arts in society and cultures. I aim to have my students understand that dance has an important part in our history. I will also help students have a greater appreciation for themselves and what they are capable of learning whether it is new things or improving on old skills.
-
Communication- Students will learn how to communicate with movement and dance, no words are needed. I hope to guide students to communicate their own feelings through movement. I will promote student interaction and discussions as well as group projects and activities. In the increasing digital world, it is important for students to be able to interact face to face with teachers and peers. I will create a safe space for students to feel that these interactions are possible.
-
Courage- I want to show my students that courage is a great thing! To have the courage to try something new, out of a comfort zone and for an experienced dancer, taking the next leap to advancing a step. It will take courage to dance in front of an audience or peers but this will help any student be prepared to present themselves. To be able to handle nerves and excitement under a performance situation, will help students with presentation projects and future job interviews.
-
Caring-My classroom environment will be a caring and supportive environment. Students will care about the work they are doing but also about each other. It is important for students to foster a caring spirit for dance and the arts.
-
Determination-I will help students find the determination to persevere even if something is challenging. This trait will aid them in many life situations.
-
Passion-I encourage students to be passionate about learning and trying new things, not only in dance but in life. Dance is a great place to put passions on display and I will create a supportive, safe environment for students to really feel and be themselves.
-
Respect-Students in my class will respect themselves, other students, peers and the art form of dance. I will teach how to respect a theater, classroom, costumes, props, backstage crew and other important aspects of dance. There will be a respect for dance history, music and culture of various dance styles from around the world.
-
Risk Taking- Students will be risk takers every day in class, learning new skills and working with peers.
-
Balance-Students will be well rounded in learning about the arts as well as using all different parts of their body and mind. Dance helps to teach motor skills and body awareness.
-
Reflection-My class will always have a time for reflection, daily, weekly and monthly. It is important to mark a journey from how a student begins the first class and how they have grown by the end of the course. A reflection journal is a great way to remember each class what has been accomplished and how the process improves learning and heart.
